You might say (in the musical styling of Flight of the Conchords "He likes Pies".
So finding out via my brother Sam's Simpson's calendar that the 23rd of January was 'Pie Day' was akin to finding out the Stephen Donald of the Chiefs/All Blacks is moving into the neighbourhood. (Or finding out you've won Lotto for those of us in the sane non-rugby fanatical world.) He brings new meaning to the word 'Piety'.
For this our Pie Day pilot we originally planned to have an all day pie extravaganza. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Pies! But Les had to go to work and we knew we'd be having a BBQ for lunch at the family day.
Then we thought we'd make a savoury and a sweet homemade pie to enjoy for dinner- but I was worried because we don't have a tried and true Pie recipe so I was going to have to make a guess and hope that it tasted good.
So we did this......

Kieran, Merenia, and I went to the supermarket and chose a selection of tasty pastry dishes.
From the expensive $4.80 MacKenzie High Country Pie...

Each Pie was cut into six pieces. It was possibly a little pie in the sky to think that Will would eat this much pie. It was time for the Stockley Pie Day Pioneers to begin the great Pieg Out!

He was the champion Pie eater!
Then the discussion turned to different types of pies...

We decided a pint of drink was in order.
That Pie day should be held as a picnic in Paeroa, Whenuapai, Huapai, or Paekakariki.
That we could supplement the celebrations with some movie viewing with titles such as 'Good Bye Pork Pie' and 'American Pie'.
The coversation was longer than a Python. The number of Pie-ism's that we came up with would have stunned Pythagoras.

The following Pie Graph has only limited relevance to Pie day but it's inclusion was requested by the Stockley Pie Guru....

We won't be pining for pies for too long though we're going to reprise (or should that be Re-pies) our pie day performance on Pi Day- March 14th aka 3.14! (Also the month of Pisces- by the way)
We're on the look out for recipes for delicious pies as we thought we'd trial a pie a month for the rest of the year. And celebrate Pie Day 2011 with our favourite sweet and savoury from the year past. So if you have a family fave then send it our way!
And what Pie Day post would be complete without a pie recipe for the readers so here's one for you....
