In the Garden

We've been here almost 9 months! That's 3 seasons already and I haven't blogged much at all about our garden! We were so lucky getting a house so new that there was literally nothing in the back yard- and having a cool landlady who was happy for us to put in a garden!
So here it is much like Auckland weather- 3 seasons in one day!

Spring:
Corn, Sunflowers, Sweet & Snow Peas already in the background plus Rhubarb and a Bougainvillea Will is sowing beetroot, having just done the carrots and spring onions. It was interesting to observe the results of this as there were a lot of 'clumps' of seedlings- not much success though:
Lesson for next year: water, Water, WATER!

We planted the Watermelon down the end of the garden so the vines could grow over the mulched area.

Tomatoes, capsicum, lettuce and cucumbers.
Lesson for next year: No. 1. Use the lettuce.
No. 2: water, Water, WATER!

Lawns looking a bit brown? Probably needs some water.

Still need more water.

Chilli plant in the herb garden.
Kieran said: Are these Chillies?
Me: Yes.
Kieran: Can I try it?
Me: Yes.
Kieran: Stuffs whole chilli in mouth and chews.
Les and Gypsy: Simultaneously shocked and fascinated.
Kieran: Beet red and now spitting.
Gypsy: Worried.
Kieran: Guzzling water, milk, ice. Splashing lips. Floundering in pain.
Les: Googling

30 minutes later.

Kieran: Still applying cold face cloth, yoghurt, ice etc to lips and periodically drinking more milk.
Gypsy: Wishing it had have been kosher to take photos and video in this situation.

Present day: We take the chillies to Les' work, too scared to eat them.

Summer:
We enjoyed lots of snow peas. Saw not one sweetpea.
The corn plants looked awesome and so did the sunflowers.

Watermelon plants below starting to grow.

Herb garden.

Late summer- the one really decent corn cob we got....

An example of the other corn cobs..... perhaps lacking water?

Watering in the buff?
Still not enough.

 Cucumbers like WATER.

Autumn the Herb Garden totally rocking it!

Everything else pretty much on way out.... except the mice who are coming to feast on corn, the odd dried pea and sunflower seeds.

Watermelon just starting to take off....

For some reason all the melons we got rotted on the half that was touching the ground.... probably TOO much flippin' water!
