Not a charm

I read an article in the Playcentre Magazine recently which I was really pleased about. It's not mainstream knowledge but it's a fact that the natural order of movement development for babies is: roll, commando crawl, crawl and then SIT and stand and walk.

The thing is most babies get 'taught' how to sit before they can crawl because it's a darn sight more convenient for their parents to put them in a swing/highchair/exersaucer or, god forbid, a walker or bumbo than to have to hold them when they get tired of being on the floor.

If you sit them up before they can crawl then they are using muscles that aren't yet fully developed and ready. But if they crawl first then they have already got it all sorted. It's a bit like trying to build the walls before you've laid the foundations... the house can end up a bit shaky and fall over a bit.

The article in the magazine said that babies who do things in the natural order, who crawl first, don't fall over when they start to sit, which I have found is pretty much true. It also said that they also don't fall over when they walk.... this I have found is not true... although it could be that Will is at the stage where is left brain is integrating with the right- which can literally be a bit of a stumbling block for some. I hope that is the case because if not he sure is accident prone at the moment.

Of course I haven't managed to catch a fall on camera yet but I do have a catalogue of injuries of late.....
Will's first plaster as a result of altercation with a set of tongs he grabbed and ran with....

An meeting of head and window sill in a moment of 'Dad's home' excitement....

A fat and cut lip after 'something' happened in Merenia's room....

I was kind of hoping the third time would have been the charm and that was when he fell off the stadium.....
