This week on the web...

Brandon from Humans of New York gave a description and some some cool ideas for the Story Corps App.

If you need some ideas to give you some enthusiasm about your photography (I do) then Capture your 365's April List is a good place to start.

While you are there you may want to check the article on how to edit a flower for awesomeness.

5 ways to Nourish yourself today from Dr Libby.

I placed a bunch of rules around why I can't paper scrapbook right now (need to finish about 4 things first) and to be honest it's killing me slowly. So I decided that I should just go do a page, but I'm frozen and won't even pull my chair up to my scrapbooking table! If you are having the same issues a prompt might help.

Shock news: contra to the headlines, people with depression have jobs! There is a quote embedded in this article that sums it all up:
"Clearly assessment of all pilots’ physical and mental health is entirely appropriate - but assumptions about risk shouldn't  be made across the board for people with depression, or any other illness. There will be pilots with experience of depression who have flown safely for decades  and assessments should be made on a case by case basis.
Today’s headlines risk adding to the stigma surrounding mental health problems, which millions of people experience each year, and we would encourage the media to report this issue responsibly."
The story of Angus on That Sugar Film Blog is a pretty extreme one but when you tease out the symptoms and signs you can probably find some them in at least one (or two) of your own kids. And it's awful stuff hard to live with as a kid and hard to cope with as a parent. Not to mention the long term effects of sugar (diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, and dementia). Which is why I often feel mightily pissed off when someone criticises or undermines my own efforts. It's actually quite a monumental task to remove as much sugar as possible from your family's diet especially in the face of two food loving teenagers with attitude. There's this sort of idea of it being deprivation to take sugar away, or it just being a treat- tantrums, brain fuzz, poor attention span, sugar lows, acne, generally poor behaviour, depression and aggression are not a treat for kids any more than they are for parents.

Low-Carb RN has a good article on Type 2 Diabetes this week... I never realised that a lack of sleep can increase insulin resistance.

This one was a big surprise to me: Milk May increase Bone Fractures. Skip the milk- do strength training.

Teacher Tom talks about our current education system this week. I don't think that most parents will be able to swallow this information- people take on this stuff so personally- they see it as a failure on their own part as opposed to a failure on the policy makers parts to have a research driven 'best practice' system- parents trust that educators are doing what is best for children. And those educators for the most part trusted their teachers at university to teach them how to teach right- we all got ripped off- and for what? (He also links to an article about some 6th graders used to test the tests asking for payment for their services- cool kids and cool teacher!)
Left out in this equation are the children and what is best for them, and frankly, what's best for our society, which relies upon well-educated citizens in order to function.

It's a bit late for Easter Egg decorating- but we don't need an excuse to have fun and these look like fun!

And if that's not an option then some kitchen science would make my boys quite happy these holidays.

The problem with the internet is that it's so darn big that you forget about the cool stuff that you've seen because you can't fit it all in your brain. Wait but Why is one of the cooler places on the internet and I have read and enjoyed their earlier posts on Procrastination So was pleased to find a third!

Finally some pretty stuff... including some more reasons to learn to knit!

Love these nesting bowls from Kikki-K would look great on my scrapbook table!
