This week on the web...

A little more reading time this week I caught up on Teacher Tom and I liked all of it of course but especially this one on Wrestling or RuffleTumble which is what it's currently called in our house. :-) And this one which makes so much sense to me... adults can be so hopeless sometimes it's often better to get a child to do the work. :-) And finally the disease of stuff is a really good read.

A nice article about 'tantrums' and good ways to deal with them both as a parent and observer.

Dr Libby has 10 tips to improve your health...most of them are common sense but Manage your energy not your time made me pause for thought.

Rude, mean and bullying defined, this is worth thinking about if you have children or work with them.

Boredom: The Lazy parents Strategy for inspiring creativity. This was a good read and I am happy that we have places in our home where the kids can pursue their passions- the one place we do fall down is leading by example... so something to think about.

I'm so sick of teacher bashing in the media almost the world over- so I enjoyed this article.

A few recipes that could be worth a look: Eggy Muggins and Slow Cooked Zucchini (not for the kids) and Almond Butter Bark... definitely for the kids.

“We exist together in a little patch of warmth and light.” is the very apt description given to reading aloud to your kids in this Wall Street Journal article- the writer goes on to say.. "For 45 minutes or an hour adults can give children—and themselves—an irreplaceable gift, a cultural grounding, a zest for language, a stake in the rich history of storytelling. That’s not so long, surely? There will be plenty of time afterward for everyone to go back online." Or you can just keep reading.

I think this will be my last 'This week on the web' for a while I was seriously considering the need for a shelf on my Good Reads called 'Started, renewed, still never finished'... I have a pile of books on my bedside table I'm keen to give the attention they deserve!

This week on the web...

I've been trying to squeeze in some reading in the 'bits between' this week after having a pretty lean time of it over the last few weeks. Here's what I'm reading....

Just one of many a teacher quits her job because she can't do it properly because politicians don't know shit about education- nothing will change until people can see the damage that's been done.

Take drugs (with side effects) and gain 2 days longevity- Whoo hoooo!! Or you can just live a side effect free enjoyable life for couple of days less.

Dieticians advise: Don't give sound advice (our sponsors won't like it).  FFS!

I think Will and I need to try this phone hologram hack.

An Epic Battle Extra Virgin Olive Oil Vs. Coconut Oil... we were discussing this just last night and this popped up in my feed. :-)

An interesting article about Cholesterol... it's not bad.

For my scrapbooky friends Jennifer Wilson asks what would you do if you could start all over again? It's an interesting question.

This week on the web....

There's still lots going on at my place at the moment so not really any real time for reading but here's what I did see.....

Mental health benefits to delaying academic instruction for young children- This is huge, I hope the governments are listening!

“We found that delaying kindergarten for one year reduced inattention and hyperactivity by 73 percent for an average child at age 11,” Dee said, “and it virtually eliminated the probability that an average child at that age would have an ‘abnormal,’ or higher-than-normal rating for the inattentive-hyperactive behavioral measure.”

 I love Kikki-K's Advent card- it goes in my Daily December every year!

 

I never knew there was such a thing as Dyslexia Empowerment week- I think it's great that there is! As a side note Jackie French the author mentioned in this post is one of my favourites as well.

I think quite possibly I want all these books for the kids!! I have already seen Life is like the Wind in real life- we brought it for a cousin when her Grandad was dying- an excellent book for grief and loss.

How we teach reading in Australia is different to how we teach it in NZ- I think a mix of both and a little something more is what is needed. As a mother of a couple of kids who taught themselves to read one at age 3.5 years and one in spite of Dyslexia all because they were read too daily from birth I know it doesn't have to be hard.

This week on the web....

This is a very cool story I knew nothing of... it seems the world has come a ways on racial equality... but there's still such a long way to go.

I am a little embarrassed to admit it but I'd love to try this very funky face mask/blackhead remover. I watched the video on you tube.

The list in this post by teacher tom is fascinating- it has within it a 1979 list for school readiness... things have changed, children haven't.

Building a culture of risk....

...we live in a culture of fear and risk aversion which if not addressed, is going to have a detrimental effect on our children’s development and their ability to show good judgement, courage, persistence, resiliency and self confidence as adults.

Talking about struggling learners... it still blows my mind that some schools in the US only have 15 minutes of actually playing time in a school day.

An interesting article about why dividing people by age to learn doesn't make sense and some ideas about why the alternative will work better. I wonder if this will ever happen in mainstream education?

This was interesting, serving sizes on packaging in the US reflect what people eat on average (or did eat historically).  I am assuming it's not same in NZ and Australia as ours say 'recommended' serving size.

Chug some water before meals to help lose weight.

Fresh corn, avocado, tomato and basil salad.... YUM!

This article on infant feeding was a real stunner to me I'd want more information before I changed my baby feeding habits (if I had a baby to feed), but hmmmm... interesting!

An interesting article about food and learning at ScienceWA. This article about literacy and family bugged me a LOT the conflicting concepts of 'best practice' and 'falling behind' in year 1... aaarrrggghhh!!!

'We have Austism all wrong' is a great read if you have or know someone with Autism or work in a field where it could be something you need to understand. This one was a real eye opener for me.

A very bookish week on the web... (Bliss)

I'm not on Instagram but I'd consider it just to follow Chris Riddell.

Michael Rosen is a children's author I've loved for a very long time. What I did not know till I found his blog and facebook page is that he is so many more things than just a children's author.

And on the subject of Michael Rosen I've just reserved the book reviewed here at the library... seems like a good one to check out... I'll let you know.

Talking about children's authors Shirley Hughes was honoured recently with a lifetime achievement award. I love this account of the award ceremony which speaks to the unending magic of stories.

And talking about getting books to children, this is a cool story.

Bookwitch's interview with Shaun Tan was an interesting read- especially the concept of whole a country that values Children' Literature... I'd be happy with a household that really values Children's literature!!
