I think three might possibly be the best birthday of them all.... did I say that already? It feels like it but it's worth repeating. As a late 2 year old you understand the concept of what is to come. You can cope with the anticipation. And getting anything wrapped in pretty paper thrills you. On top of that you are old enough to make choices about what you want, and not too precious to really care if you don't get the choices. You also don't yet have a concept of 'cool' and 'uncool' so anything goes.
On top of that our almost three year old loves anything and everything with the passion of a romance story. Tama literally invited the people he wanted at his party because they were "my best friends in the whole wide world" and he means it. He loves these people with a strength that leaves him unable to speak sometimes and just expressed with a breathless sigh.
"Mum I just love Pam so much I.... ahhh sigh"
Our newly three year old's excitement was almost palpable he was fairly hysterically screaming when he opened his toy crane and he pretty darn happy about getting a duvet cover and pillow cases. His joy transferred to all around him and that just made him and us happier still.
Three year olds are still happy to get books... their mothers love them all the more for this.
3 year olds are fairly non-territorial as well so it's easy to give them a gift that they have to, and are in fact happy to, share with everyone else. :-)
They don't care about grammar or fancy cake decorations- unlike some 13 year olds I know. In fact simple delights them, provided their candles.
3 year olds would be happy with even half of this and don't care that their gift tally is padded out with clothes and bedding.
Three year olds don't need all the party palaver and they don't care about loot bags full of plastic crap and sugar. And they seem to believe their party is still the most awesome thing ever, as it was.
Three year olds are just plain old, pure and simple happy to have the people they care about around them.
Three year olds fully appreciate the gift of 6 envelopes that each hold an oddly cut piece of paper with the particular scrawling of a 4 year old and they delight in the opening of each envelope and the receiving of each carefully crafted albeit brief 'letter'.
Three year olds set their priority for enjoyment- as it should be.
They don't care for the niceties.
But they sure do care for candles.
And singing. :-)
And quietly enjoying the spoils at the end of a wonderful day.
