Story Chapter 21- Friend Stories

I thought that a good way to follow up last weeks story post about my friend troubles was to share a positive story relating to friends.

It's fitting that I do this with a scrapbook page.....

Scrapbooking has brought me some of my very best friends. It has also consolidated some of my relationships into firm friendships through a shared passion (I'm talking about you Miss Wendy).

So the layout above is about one of my first online scrapbook purchases. It's just a short story in a digital page which I intend to tell in more detail on a paper page sometime soon.

But, long story short- I brought the star items in the photo above on Trade Me and then went to Glenfield to pick them up from the seller, Carolann. She had not long got home from her first ever Scrapbook Camp and she and her friend were telling me all about it. To be honest I wasn't 100% sure it was something I wanted to do and in particular something I wanted to spend my precious scrapbooking money on. But six months later armed with a car full of supplies, a paid album to do, and a boat load of bravery in the form of Wendy as a scrapping companion I went to camp as a day camper. It was AWESOME! So awesome that on the second day I took my sleeping bag and pillow and stayed on as a fully fledged camper.

And that was the start of some really incredible friendships both we people at that camp and some who joined us in the future. And it's gone on to the point where now my Mum and her best friend now attend camp and I also introduced another friend to camp as well. Now we have a circle of scrapbook loving friends that share a common passion, a whole bunch of funny stories, a truck load of memories and hell of a lot of good times.

White Bouganvillea

The pink Bougainvillea we have in our backyard is ostentatious and spectacular.

The White is pure elegance.
(Makes me want to do a scrapbook page with a green and white colour scheme).

'May The 4th be with you' dinner.

Will is a bit Star Wars fanatical lately (Even Tama has a thing for Darth Vader). On May the 4th they had a ten episode Star Wars: The Clone Wars Marathon (Will watched far too much of it!!) and we decided to also go with the theme and have a Star Wars Dinner.....

On the Menu....

Darth Taters, Bacon Bread Light Sabres, Princess Leia's Buns.
(The light sabres were supposed to be bacon wrapped around thick pretzels- but we couldn't find any so these ended up looking a little lame.)

Ewok-amole and Qui Gon Chips

Han Burgers

Not the worlds most healthy meal... luckily we don't do this stuff often.

Dagobah Swamp Juice and Yoda Soda.

We scattered some Star Wars toys around the table for decoration and set to eating.

Bacon is always popular with Kieran. :-)

And for dessert ......

Han Solo in Jellignite
(If you are wondering we made the Jelly in a flat glass dish and then stuck a picture of Han in the carbonite to the bottom of the dish- looked pretty cool).

And Tie Fighter Ice cream.

Makes Me Happy #3

I have a bit of a thing for stationery so I was more than a little happy recently to receive not one but two super cool notebooks in the mail from my friends.

The one in the middle is from one of my very dear friends, also a student of mine a few years back, Daniella. It totally appeals to my sense of humour- although I'm not entirely sure I can use it as it was intended- it's not really my thing to write long lists about why people are annoying me. :-) But I do like the quotes.....

The ones either side are made by Compendium Inc. Who make a whole bunch of super duper stuff!! The 'Miracle and Wonder' one I already had. And 'All things Grow with Love' came from my super awesome friend Carolann!
These note books come with a scattering of cool illustrated quotes and lined pages. They are themed loosely on different topics. I've since brought a couple more because they're so cool... and like I said I have a thing for staionery!

Supply Overload!

Just a quick one from me today because I'm busy with a bunch of 'stuff' and I really need to have an early night!

But I've got a problem and I'm hoping my scrappy friends can help.

I'm slowly getting back into scrapbooking and I'm changing the way I deal with most of my photos (more on that later). What I'm finding is that what should be a fast and easy way to scrap is being slowed down by supply overload. I can easily purge a bit of stuff but there's still a whole bunch that I have that I really want to use. But I can't keep going through my whole stash for each set of photos that I scrap because it's wasting my time!!

So my question is do you have any strategies for using up your stash easily?

In the past I have essentially kitted up a number of pages at once laying out the supplies I want to 'use up' and matching them to the best fit photos/LO's. But I don't think that will work for me now and I am reticent to 'kit-up' a bunch of pages as I am scrapping too slowly so I know that when I come to my kitted pages my motivation/ideas/mood will have changed and I won't necessarily want to follow the plan I had already started. I also want to avoid using stash just for the sake of using it- because I've found in the past it often doesn't make a page that I am 100% happy with... rather it makes a page that is the best of a bad situation. Or it makes a page that was supposed to use certain supplies but actually doesn't. :-)

Ideas please....

Story Chapter 20 - Being a good friend, or not

When I got married my Dad was my 'maid of honour' there was no one else who had been in my life long enough or who was closer to me than him. There was no real friendship of significance at that time that merited the honour of holding that spot.

I've always had friends but they seem to have been transient through my life for various reasons. I've moved from Dunedin, to Auckland to Blenheim to Nowra to Auckland and now to Perth. Or they've moved. In some cases we've grown apart and there was also a break-up of a significant friendship.

I always liked the phrase :"friends for a reason, a season and a lifetime". I have certainly had some of the former two and only a few of the latter. I've also used it as an excuse to separate myself from people that I feel I no longer have a place for in my life.

I am a strongly loyal friend and very generous. But I can also be what I'd describe as a 'bit aspergers' in my relationships and completely miss signals and also act quite aloof. It only occurs to me much later when I think of how an exchange 'should' have played out- what I should have done in that situation. At which point I'm kicking myself for inadvertently treating someone really special quite poorly.

I really struggle most of all in my relationships with women. I have had some really impactful relationships that have left me with a fortress like barrier around my heart and soul most of the time the drawbridge is down- but the barricades will go up in a snap if I sense a threat- real or imagined. My reaction is either to fight or more likely to run- and run fast.

I am also finding that the older I get and the busier I get I'm more fussy about the people outside of family that I'm willing to spend my time on and with. I also believe that I am a fairly good judge of who I am going to gel with and who I'm not. And that means that I can decide quite quickly if I think a friendship is worth pursuing. When we first arrived in Perth I worked really hard to find friends. Really hard. So hard I pretty much felt burnt out by it in the end. And since then to be honest I've been behaving badly.

We all have a little voice inside us that tells us if we're doing something decent or not, something loving, something sharing, something giving, but sometimes we have a lot of chatter in our lives. That's why we need to learn to be quiet and listen.
~Christopher Reeve

I've met a few people and have one established friend, my neighbour Bel, and three or four more in the works- parents of the kids friends that I'd like to get to know better. I find it hard, because our connection is the kids, to find a common thing outside of the kids that we could build the friendship on. Especially because I've never been one of those people who does coffee, or lunch or goes out to do things- I'm a homebody and happy being so.

That said I've met a few others that could have been friends and even indeed wanted to be friends but I made fairly quick decisions that they weren't for me. One came across as someone who I had a lot in common with and shared values but in reality was quite false and pretentious- I have no time for that at all. Two came with massive piles of baggage- which in itself I don't have a problem with. I mean I have a fair bit myself, but I try very hard not to let it define who I am. I don't spend my days playing the victim and consistently sending out a 'woe is me' message. And with four children, a husband and my own welfare to care for I don't have the emotional energy to take on a friend who is like that. Luckily for me one of those people just didn't continue the contact beyond the mutual point that brought us together in the first place.

But... and here's where we get to the point where my bad behaviour comes in... there are two people I have met since I got here- one of those mentioned above and another that I decided fairly early on weren't the friends for me.

I am gutless. A complete coward.

I don't want to hurt someone's feelings and I certainly don't want to be 'there' when I do it. So I've been rudely ignoring those two people when they have contacted me. I should front up and just let them know that I don't think we should continue the friendship but I have just really struggled to do it.

Until now.

Ailsa,

I appreciated the time that you took to email me before we came to Perth. I was happy to welcome you into my home and had great hopes for a friendship with another displaced Kiwi here in Perth.

I found that when we spoke at my home during your visit that we had conflicting views on practically every topic that we discussed. When you went home I felt defeated and dispirited and thought that I was unlikely to hear from you again. I don't believe that any of your opinions or beliefs are in any way bad but I simply don't share them. While I can see that two people are unlikely to agree on everything, the number of things that we disagreed on and the conviction behind your opposing opinions on some really key subjects I believe would make a friendship between us at the very least difficult, if not impossible.

I believe that you are a kind and generous person who would make a great friend, just not a great friend for me.

I'd like to offer you a very sincere apology for the way that I have behaved. It was inconsiderate and rude and not at all how you deserved to be treated. I am sorry that I ignored your texts and comments on the blog. I should have just fronted up and said how I was feeling from the outset and I regret not doing so. For all of that I unreservedly apologise.

Sincerely,
Gypsy

Not one of the better parts of my story. But an important one and something to learn from for the future.

Woven

So I have a bit of a sentimental attachment to the kids baby clothes. Woven into the very fibres are my memories. The size of their little bodies. The softness, the smell and so many adventures. Specific items bring to mind certain babies- even Saskia is in there. I have got a least one key outfit  in each of their memory boxes- a item that just screams "Will" or "Kieran" or.... And I did manage to move some of it on to the Op shop. But the stack above remained. I don't want to hold onto too much stuff so I came up with a plan, and on my recent day off I started to execute it.

When I went through the stack there were a few more items I realised I couldn't bring myself to use for this project so these went in their memory boxes as well.

Then I cut the rest up.....

And now I have a pile of what was the largest square or rectangular piece or pieces I could cut from each item. And some time in the not too distant future I'm going to sew them all together and make myself a quilt. So long after my babies grow up and leave home I'll be able to wrap myself up in the memories of them that I cherish.

Horsin' around

The Stick Horses from Will's school needed some tender loving care. Three of them managed to get away with minor repairs but the other three needed a complete facelift. I've never made anything like this before which makes me even happier with the results which I think are pretty darn good. All in all with a little recycling, op-shopping, and stash busting I think they cost about $12 for all three.
If you want to have a go I used the tutorial here at Mad Mim.

Recycling

Our shire has what they call a verge side collection every six months. Much like the inorganic in Auckland- only it's pretty much everything. I spotted the notice board below as I was going past some ones pile the other day on the way to grab the kids. Then on my way back past I didn't see it and figured someone had scored it. A week or so later and I see it again so stopped by and grabbed it.

As you can see the notice board is mouldy and mildewy but other than that it's in pretty good condition. I stripped it back to it's bare bones and left it out in the sun as the week long sit outside had left it a bit damp.
Then when I had my 'day off' I dug through my fabric stash for something suitable. The only piece I had that was big enough was a piece of amazing red silk which I am totally in love with and wish I could find a use for. It wasn't the best choice for this project but it was the only choice without having to waste precious time on a trip to spotlight.

30 minutes and a bunch of staples later... done!
(I ran out of black ribbon but I actually like the green here anyway and may look at replacing all the black if I can find a similar colour ribbon some where.)

Then I installed it in it's new home.

And I love it!
