Tiny Tales Week 26

Week 26 started early for everyone. Kieran, Tama and I went to Hockey across town. Les, Merenia and Will headed down to Rockingham so Merenia could go to St Johns Comps. Les and Will spent the day exploring Rockingham and surrounds.

Will practised he Ninja Warrior Skills. And was successful on the course....

They all came home happy including Merenia who placed 2nd in her grade.

Back at home after a post Hockey sleep Tama enjoyed the birthday display and balloons, no time for presents before we left... lucky he was too little to realise!

I made radioactive Vanilla Cake...

When everyone was finally home Tama got to open his presents... he was an absolute pro!

We had a roast for dinner- Meat- Tama's favourite!

And then the cake....

The rest of the week was pretty stock standard Stockley stuff... Kitchens with Tama's new gear.

Crawling, Climbing and other heart attack inducing stuff... Tama may be close to the ground but he has no fondness for it- he's always trying to go up, up, UP!

Construction and destruction.....

Finally it wouldn't be a normal week in Perth without some large unidentifiable item (or three) on the back of a truck taking up the better part of the main road.....

Maybe a section of bridge? Something for mining? Or the ever elusive Wigwam for a goose's bridle?

What's wrong with crying?

“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.” ~Jim Valvano US Basketball Coach

We just finished a series of Masterchef here in Australia. We all watched and enjoyed it for various reasons. Every so often I wasted a bit of time on the Masterchef Australia page on Facebook. It was a popular page, heaps of comments, lots of opinions. But the one think that really struck me was the utter hatred and rancour for anyone that dared to cry. One contestant in particular took a real hammering due to the semi-constant stream of tears that poured fourth from her eyes any time anything even remotely emotional happened.

Why?

What's wrong with crying?

I should preface this by saying I'm a 'cryer'. I cry at a lot of things. Sometimes bizarre things. I cried watching the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. I've cried at school in assembly when the kids sing the national anthem. I've cried watching a family get their new home on a reality TV show. And my all time absolute most strange cry was on a weekday morning watching an info-mercial for Canberra (Aust).

Yes I said Canberra.

"Oh Canberra... sob, sob.... so pretty... sob sob... would be nice to visit.... boo hoo hoo hooo."

That was in October 1997- I was 8 months pregnant. I think maybe hormones had some sway on that particular tear-fest. :-)

So anyway, I'm partial to a good cry. I don't mind listening when others need a cry and I'm quite happy to hand out a cuddle to someone who's shedding a tear. Some people are not. In fact some people are so anti-crying it's down right vicious.

I get that for some people being in the company of someone who is crying can be quite uncomfortable. You don't know what to do, you can't take away their pain, you can't make them stop. If the reason for the crying is shared it can be particularly bad because people don't want to be influenced to cry as well and 'lose it'.

I realise we have a stigma in our culture around crying. Phrases like "It was enough to make a grown man cry" suggest that crying is not a 'manly' thing to do. We talk about not crying as being 'strong' a sign of weakness. And someone that does cry is a cry-baby.

But this contestant was a young woman in the midst of a full on emotional event. It was on TV- none of the viewers had to deal with it. It wasn't likely to be 'hurting' them in the sense that they may also have wanted to cry. So I wonder why there was such a slew of  vitriol and rage expressed at this girls crying on Facebook? The masses were baying for her blood... send her home!

Strangely enough towards the end of the competition another contestant suffered the same sort of barrage of abuse for being at the other end of the scale... she, supposedl,y was a 'robot' incapable of showing emotion and people hoped she'd meet the same fate as her 'overly' emotional fellow competitor because of it.

I'm of the opinion it's not the crying that's a problem. It's the fact that hundreds of people, the vast majority of commenter's in fact, felt that it was reasonable for them to openly publish their rhetoric which was unsympathetic at best, and completely hostile at worst. That hatred is more acceptable than tears is a sad indictment of the society that we live in.

“Happiness lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.”

Tiny Tales Week 25

We had visitors!!! Ferne came with Angel, Clover and Koru! The younger kids had a lovely time while Ferne and I caught up.

 This boy is a crack-up!!!

They laid the foundations for two houses just around the corner from us. Exciting stuff!! We get to walk past everyday and see how things are going and what they are up to. The brickies really blast the music. It's funny to watch Tama dancing in the push chair to Billy Idol.

We took an early morning walk around the pond to feed the ducks- very pretty with the son just breaking through the trees and water evaporating up off the grass.

Lots of Lego and Duplo construction- Les likes to follow the instructions. But Will has been doing some creative stuff... Tracey Island amongst other things.

We founded two new birthday Traditions on Tama's 1st birthday eve- (the last first birthday this family will see for a long long time!). A dozen birthday balloons and a display of photos of the birthday person over the course of their life- very cool!

365 Week 27

Round-up~ July 2012

On our bookshelf this month....
Merenia is still doing the Twilight thing. Kieran other than the newspaper has been reading the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. Will and I are still enjoying Noddy together and he mostly reads library books with Les. Tama is having lots of Nursery Rhymes, Maisy and Hairy Mclary. I read 'Why we get fat' by Gary Taubes and found it very interesting reading. Les got a whole stack of Aircraft related books to read for his birthday but has yet to get the opportunity. He did read a book about eating this month too though.
I'd like to take a moment to just say a little thanks for Margaret Mahy and that she has given to children's literature, she will be sorely missed. For the little ones my favourite Mahy stories are 'A Summery Saturday Morning' and 'The Witch in the Cherry Tree' For the bigger ones; 'Memory' is my absolute favourite but I also love 'The Changeover' and 'The Tricksters'.
Loving on the box....
A lot of the good shows are finishing up and most of the networks over here aren't putting any sort of fight up against the Olympics- makes like boring! Series 3 of Offspring ended- BEST ending EVER! I LOVE that show and I will definitely be getting the DVD of S3! Survivor ended- one of the lamer seasons in Survivor history. Masterchef ended and the best of the final three won... although I'm not sure the final three really should have been the final three. Will is a huge masterchef fan and has great ambitions to go on the show and cook egg in a window. Greys Anatomy is still on- yay! And we're watching far too much Olympic sport! AFL for Kieran. Will and Merenia enjoyed The Sound of Music! Will and I enjoyed The Adventures of Milo and Otis. Kieran and I watched 28 days Later and 28 Weeks later. And Thunderbirds - what would our life be without the Tracey Family??
For you...For me?
We got gifts for the teachers for birthdays, end of term and leaving.  Les of course got a bunch of cool loot for his birthday.

Germs and bugs and botherations....
End of term-itis for Will. A snotfest for both Will and Tama. Coldsores for me- grrrrrr! Tama is teething and for the first time ever I have witnessed an Eruption Cyst- big, scary and totally normal!
Today was good today was fun, tomorrow is another one...

School Holidays- always good, cuts the running around by half- and we had no games for Netball and Hockey- so no getting up before 7am on Sunday mornings. Joe and Jan and Dave and Glenys Griffen visited while they were transiting to South Africa. We went to the beach at Hillary's, had lunch with Les and then onto the Zoo. We decorated Cupcakes day and invited people over. Wills best friend Declan came with his Mum, Kat and sister Alyssa. Les went sloping for the day. Merenia went to St Johns Camp and had a couple of sleepovers in the hols.

Yum, yum, yum....

I made a Pumpkin Cheese Cake- the topping tasted yum- especially when it was warm. Merenia made  Cinnamon Oysters. We had a massive Cupcake baking day and then decorated them and invited local friends to stop by. One of the Hockey Mums is Turkish she gave me some Baklava- can't believe I've never had it before!

'It was on sale'....

New clothes for me and Merenia. I got photos printed for the first time in ages- that should placate all the Nanas! We got a few new books for the grown ups and lucky books for the kiddos. Merenia brought a Stable on Gumtree (poor mans Trade-me). And we also brought her a Desk too. Friends of The Zoo passes for me and Will (and Tama).

Bugger!

I made Pumpkin Cheese Cake for Les' Birthday and the water bath failed and the base was a mess of soggy glug. Wills AMAZING Kindy teacher Mrs Gordon left for a more appreciative school! I tried to teach myself Crochet. All hell broke out on the NZMAA and it consumed about a week of my life!

Hooray!

The awesome lady at Spotlight who waited by the car with sleeping Tama while I ran in and got the balloons for Les' Birthday. The lovely lady who gave us her ticket so we didn't need to pay for parking at the zoo. The sweet lady in the line at the fruit and vege store who insisted upon giving Tama a banana. A family of ducklings in the pond down the road and my bulbs are coming up.

Etc...

Les helped out at a quiz night fundraiser his boss did. Les went to Exmouth for the day to fix a life raft. Les got the all-clear. Olympic Fever has set in.

You know who's good idea this was? Katie The Scrapbook Lady. Go check out her list of tasks to do at the end of each month as well.

Ice Age reprise

This has to be one of the kids most favourite ever things to do. I like to take my time and set it up over a few days. I add about a inch of water each day and a few dinosaurs and a different colour of food colouring. One day I'm going to be super flash and chill the water right down to almost freezing so the colours don't mix at all. I also read that if you make ice with boiling water you get ice that is really clear with none of the bubbling of regular ice- I want to try that as well.

Usually we use hammers to smash the ice and get the dinosaurs out but this time I showed Will how to use salt and some warm water to see the effect the salt had - (it makes the ice melt faster).

I also added some of the crystal soil balls to the ice to see what would happen when you freeze them. I think the freezing process does something to their molecular structure because they totally disintegrate when defrosted! It makes for a cool decoration on the lawn though. Especially a week later when you've forgotten they are there and it rains and they get all expanded again.

When the ice block got down to small multiple pieces we but them in a bowl of water and Tama had a great time messing around in there while Will took the blocks with dinosaurs still entombed and tried to smash them out on the pavers.

How cool do those ice layers look!!??

I love this activity for so many reasons. It's totally free to set up, you can do it over and over again. It is interesting and heaps of fun. It keeps them engaged and entranced for a long time. It doesn't have any age limitations. It has built in science concepts. And he kids LOVE doing it.  Oh and did I mention- it's totally fun!

365 Week 26

I'm writing a life...

I'm writing a list of all the things I want to do. Blogging is right near the very top. It would be at the top but I owe my Nana a letter and there are some things that just need to come first. (Shhhh don't tell her I wrote this post ok?). But the list is not all I'm writing.

“The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.”
-Carl Jung

This quote came to me via email at the start of July. I hung on to it because I need to be reminded. Reminded that my creative mind is doing shit-all and that's why I'm slowly going bonkers.

Oh my goodness I never realised just how much of my sanity hung on getting to write and make and do. And just how frustrating it is when my time is consumed by life, my habits are poor (non-existant), and I feel I'm producing nothing. It makes my heart tight. It gives me a little nausea. And it leaves me composing blog posts to myself at 4am in the morning when my time would be better spent sleeping. It feels like it has been years since I sat here and wrote from my heart. Wrote the funny stories. Wrote the hard stories.

Then I read this post by The Worlds Strongest Librarian (TWSL) and it totally got me excited! I emailed the link to a friend who I knew would 'get' it and be able to discuss. And then something came up and I got too busy and forgot, till just now. In the post Josh (TWSL) asks:

"Are you living the story you imagined?  Do you still imagine?"

I find the concept of my life as a story really exciting. It's strange actually that I never thought of it like this before. I mean lets face it I am my family's story teller!

If my life is a story- and lets face it- it has the makings of an epic: Romance, tragedy, adventure and a damn lot of comedy. Then I'm creating everyday.

From the moment I wake up each morning I am crafting a life well lived. Everyday my creative mind has the opportunity to play with an object that I love- my life. Some days I don't love it- but it's all part of the story. And if it's not a life well-lived then I have the opportunity to rewrite, to edit and recreate, re-imagine every day- every moment really. How cool is that?!

Shhhh... I'm hiding

There's halo around the moon tonight, it's beautiful. I wonder if you can see it in New Zealand. Probably not. Too many clouds I expect. Not a problem we often have here in Western Australia.

The children are asleep. Finally.

The TV is streaming the hopes and dreams of thousands of sports men and women to two empty couches.

Les is taking a long time to do a job across town. I wonder if perhaps he's had an accident. I often worry that he'll go and leave me. Wonder what I'll do. What would be best. What would even be possible. In reality he's probably talking gliding with a kindred spirit about to embark on his own journey in the hopes of sporting glory as Les did 2 year ago.

If we win the lottery in the next few days Les will take a trip to South Africa. The F3J worlds are on and he'd happily be a bag boy for anyone who would take him if he could just get there. It'd fill his tank with all the goodness he's been missing since we left the green flying fields of home.

My tank is empty. And it seems that despite that it's still being sucked dry. That's why I am hiding.

I got here. I worked. I 'built' our nest, I feathered it. And then I went looking for kindred spirits to come and play.

I thought I found them. My Aussie Carolann. My Australian Miss Wendy, and an Ocker Jozlyn.

I was excited, exhilarated. Like a girl with a crush.

Stupid. Silly me. These things are irreplaceable.

Instead they were imposters. Some did not follow through. Empty promises. They were the 'good' ones. The worst sucked me dry. Problems and trauma and troubles. I have enough of my own.

I don't mind listening, but I need to be heard as well. There should be 'give' if there is to be 'take'.

And so I'm hiding.

But perhaps not, hiding. Maybe choosing. Choosing not to just accept anything. Choosing to wait, wait for better things.

And maybe I can see them in the haze of the horizon. Like a dawning day. A glimmer, the first break of light is an impromptu call for cupcakes. A five minute conversation at the school gates after the 9 o'clock bell rings, where woes and celebrations are poured equally from weary hearts, is sweet like a birds early morning call.

I don't know, I guess friends are like Speights and Mainland Cheese.

She's a hard road finding the perfect woman. These things take time.
